Instances of Ford Crown Victorias Taking Flight in Hollywood
The Ford Crown Victoria was a large sedan on a platform dating back to 1979, but unfortunately discontinued in 2011. Its construction was body-on-frame, which is how conventional pickup trucks and old SUVs are built, owing to the Crown Victoria's reputation for being able to take a beating and still be drivable and cheap to service. Police departments loved and miss them dearly. The old proven technology and the old school construction contributed to making it a reliable American vehicle, even as sedans shifted to more modern unibody construction. More information about the Crown Victoria's legend status can be found in this article by Jesus R. Garcia, an automotive columnist.
Due to its mass production and having the reputation of a tank, the Crown Victoria was a very popular choice in Hollywood movies, especially the police interceptors. Many Crown Victorias have been susceptible to being destroyed for movies. To honor our fallen heroes with the legacy of a tank for a car, I compiled a list of Hollywood movies where Crown Victorias take flight.
Again, thanks to Jesus R. Garcia, but now for this article where I found out about flying Crown Victorias in movies I haven't seen and included in this list, like The Blues Brothers 2000 (1998) and The Dukes of Hazzard (2005).
Speed (1994)
Blue Streak (1999)
One of Martin Lawrence's many action comedies brings us at the helm of a beautiful shiny blue Crown Victoria detective vehicle that he jumps over an iconic L.A. bridge over the river that I've flown past many times in GTA V.
National Security (2003)
In the interests of National Security, there are numerous instances of Crown Victorias taking flight! Martin Lawrence plays himself as a cop again as he flies through a police training road course. Perhaps the suspect said something bad about his mama! He then gets into trouble with the cops and makes an escape as cop cars fly through the air. Somehow, the Crown Victoria got some regenerative James Bond hubcap technology that I never knew about.
Gone in 60 Seconds (2000)
Nicolas Cage is brought back into the grand theft auto business until the final boss battle with Eleanor against an armada of L.A.P.D. Ford Crown Victorias with air support. At the docks, Eleanor and pursuing Crown Victorias make a small jump, but the poor Fords are too late and crash into an oncoming front loader.
Live Free or Die Hard (2007)
Long after the incident at Nakatomi Plaza, John McClane uses a police Crown Victoria and jumps it into a helicopter to destroy it. Yes, you heard that right. This occurred shortly after a car possessing too much potential energy was flown around inside a tunnel like a ping pong ball.
The Blues Brothers 2000 (1998)
In this scene, the main characters make a getaway in a 1990 Ford LTD Crown Victoria with lots of police on their tail. If the police were lemmings, this would be a very accurate depiction as Crown Victorias fly into the air after getting caught in road construction.
Dukes of Hazzard (2005)
Car jumps and The Dukes of Hazzard have been happily married since the 1980s. In the 2005 movie, the General Lee 1969 Dodge Charger makes a jump but the Crown Victoria police cars don't make the jump.
Shooter (2007)
Mark Wahlberg is a Marine Corps sniper, but he gets double-crossed and the cops are after him. After stealing an FBI Crown Victoria, he makes a getaway in the city from the cops before forcing to reverse off a platform into the water. Sort of counts, right?
Collateral (2004)
Jamie Foxx finally stands up against the mighty Tom Cruise towards the end of the movie by crashing his yellow cab on a concrete barrier. The Crown Victoria sees a little bit of air before flipping repeatedly and destroying itself. Then it comes to rest on the other side of the street where there are more Fords parked.
John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)
John Wick recovers his 1969 Mustang from the Russian mobster brother of the victim from the first movie. It is kept at the NYC Taxi depot that the Russians supposedly own. As John Wick makes a jump from inside the garage doorway to outside, a Crown Victoria taxi follows and makes a small jump too, as the gangsters try to prevent John Wick from leaving with his car.
Transporter 2 (2005)
Jason Statham makes a getaway in his beautiful Audi A8 W12 against Miami police. He jumps the car at a park on a wooden footbridge. Unfortunately, the Crown Victoria fails to land the jump correctly because the cop can't align the car good enough to get all four tires on the ramp. Then, the scene jumps to this confusing location that looks different, with the cop car going over a wooden stunt bridge. Oops.
Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Peter Parker performs a Trinity jump off a bike when he realizes he's about to get run over by criminals. Then, he goes after them and neutralizes them. However, they shot up the NYPD police cars chasing them. A Crown Victoria crashes and gets flown into the air, but Spider-Man is fast enough to save the bystanders from being obliterated. Hey, all you need is to just work out, get plenty of rest, you know, eat your green vegetables.
Respect the Crown
Hopefully this list entertained you and gave you an idea of a movie to watch. Shoutout to the police cruiser after the first race in The Fast and the Furious (2001) that discovered Dominic Toretto on the street, as the camera cut magically made it change its identity from a Ford Crown Victoria to a Chevy Caprice, the Crown Victoria's biggest competitor.
